iRAIN

Research in water regeneration and the application of Artificial Intelligence for a resilient agriculture in the face of climate change and water scarcity

Europe is experiencing population growth and increasing demand and pressure on water resources. In this context, it is essential to invest in new sources of supply. Therefore, water reuse has gained significant strategic importance, especially for its use in agricultural irrigation.

The implementation of favorable regulations, new rules, and improvements in the quality guarantees of regenerated water have helped promote and regulate the reuse of treated wastewater. However, it is still necessary to develop competitive technologies that can ensure not only the required quality based on its use but also its economic viability or environmental sustainability.

The goal of the iRAIN project is the research and development of an innovative advanced water resource management system combining novel treatments for the regeneration and reuse of wastewater and its nutrients, along with its monitoring and controlled and safe agricultural application through innovative hybrid monitoring systems alongside resource utilization and management systems based on artificial intelligence through the fusion of data from satellites, drones, agricultural robots, and sensor networks.
