SUB-SURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION for Extensive Crops: Wheat, Corn, and Alfalfa

Monserrate Estate

Finca Monserrate, under the direction of producer César Monserrate in Alcañiz, Teruel (Spain), is a prime example of the successful implementation of the Sub-surface Drip Irrigation (SDI), in extensive wheat farming.

Since the system was installed in 2014, the 7-hectare farm has seen significant improvements in the production and management of various crops, such as alfalfa, corn, and wheat, confirming the viability and efficiency of this technology in modern agriculture.

Location: Teruel, Spain
Farming: Alfalfa, corn, and wheat

The Challenge

The farm faced several challenges, such as the proper management of water and fertilizers and the need for uniformity in cultivation. The search for a solution that would allow for a more efficient use of resources, as well as greater adaptability to sloping land, was essential. In addition, they were looking for a solution that would make maintenance, planting, and harvesting easier.

On the other hand, they had to solve problems caused by the wind and prevent runoff, which was very difficult to manage with their old sprinkler irrigation system.

The Solution

The Dripper AZUD PREMIER PC AS, specifically designed for systems of Sub-surface Drip Irrigation (SDI), was the solution chosen for this case. Its self-compensating and anti-siphon technology prevents particles from entering the emitter when Irrigation ends, ensuring optimal performance.

This underground irrigation system has allowed water and fertilizers to reach the crop’s roots directly, maximizing absorption and preventing losses due to evaporation and uniformity issues caused by the wind. Furthermore, since there are no above-ground components—as the dripline systems are buried—agricultural work has been greatly facilitated.

Benefits of the Solution

At AZUD, we believe in building lasting relationships with our clients, ensuring the continued success of our projects through follow-up and after-sales service. The Monserrate Estate has enjoyed a number of benefits since the installation of the SUB-SURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION system, including:

  • Significant Savings in Water and Fertilizers
    Easier Maintenance and Cultivation
  • Eliminating Uniformity Issues and Runoff
  • Optimizing Production on Sloped Land

The grower’s satisfaction and the fact that there have been no problems in the 8 years since installation demonstrate the effectiveness and durability of our solutions. The system installed on this farm features the Dripper AZUD PREMIER PC AS.
