Subsurface Drip Irrigation for Pasture Crops: Savings, Efficiency, and Sustainability

Subsurface Drip Irrigation for Pasture Crops: Savings, Efficiency, and Sustainability

Finca Margaritas

the Margaritas Farm has demonstrated the extraordinary benefits of implementing the Sub-surface Drip Irrigation (SDI), becoming a leader in circular agriculture.

In an agricultural sector increasingly committed to sustainability and the efficient use of resources, this producer of forage crops for livestock grazing has achieved a milestone, not only because of the significant savings in resources and increase in production it has achieved, but also because it has demonstrated that Sustainability and profitability go hand in hand.

Location: Teruel
Farming: Forage crops for grazing livestock

The Challenge

Finca Margaritas faced the challenge of achieving a clover, fescue, and alfalfa production, more sustainable, and profitable, addressing issues related to water shortages and damage caused by animals.

Since this is crops grown for livestock feed, it was essential to find a solution that would allow the livestock to be fed without damaging the irrigation system. In addition, scheduling flexibility played an important role, as the goal was to allow the animals to graze at any time, thereby maximizing the use of available time and resources.

The goal was to achieve significant savings in water, energy, and fertilizers, performing circular agriculture: While the livestock feeds on the crops, the manure is used as fertilizer, thus closing the cycle in an efficient and sustainable manner.

The Solution

Circular agriculture, a sustainable approach that seeks to maximize efficiency and minimize waste, finds in the Sub-surface Drip Irrigation (SDI) a comprehensive solution to meet their needs. The savings in water, energy, and fertilizers have been astonishing, with reductions of up to 50%.

The solution chosen for this installation was AZUD PREMIER PC AS. Its self-compensating and anti-siphon technology makes it the best solution for RGS, as it prevents the suction of particles into the emitter when Irrigation ends. The AZUD PREMIER PC AS dripper has been specially designed for sub-surface drip irrigation systems; this, combined with the advanced technology of its components, makes it the best choice on the market.
