Precision Irrigation for Hydroponic Strawberry Cultivation

Precision Irrigation for Hydroponic Strawberry Cultivation

Esther's Fruits

Esther’s Fruits It is a leading agricultural operation located in Cartaya (Huelva) that specializes in growing berries, particularly strawberries. The farm has distinguished itself through its ongoing commitment to innovation and the improvement of its production systems, moving toward more sustainable and efficient models.

In a context marked by pressure on water resources and the need to optimize productivity, Frutas Esther has embarked on a transformation toward hydroponic cultivation, currently reaching the 95% of its area is under this system, with the goal of reaching 100% by the 2025/26 season.

To carry out this transition, the farm has relied on our technology, as well as the expertise of Sanjorge Techniques for system installation.

The Challenge

The project arose from the need to adapt the farm to an increasingly demanding environment:

  • Optimizing water consumption in the context of water shortages.
  • Ensure a high degree of uniformity in the distribution of irrigation and nutrients.
  • Replace traditional drip irrigation systems, which are less durable and generate more waste.
  • Reduce clogging and minimize maintenance work.
  • Increase productivity per hectare without compromising sustainability.
  • Improve working conditions for field staff.

The Solution

To address these challenges, we implemented a system based on our technology GENIUN WEIR, supplemented by advanced filtration solutions.

Main components of the system:

  • Installation of AZUD GENIUN 16/1L dripline (0.63 mm) at 20 cm, with a self-regulating dripper.
  • Replacing irrigation tapes with a more robust, reusable solution that has a longer service life.
  • Integration of Filtration Systems HELIX AUTOMATIC WEIR, with self-cleaning discs.
  • Design optimized to ensure a uniform flow rate even on uneven plots.

Key Features:

  • High precision in the application of water and nutrients.
  • Reliable operation under demanding hydroponic conditions.
  • Significant reduction in maintenance needs.
  • Greater durability compared to conventional solutions.

Benefits of the Solution

The implementation of the system has led to significant improvements in both agronomic and operational areas:

  • Reduced consumption of water, fertilizers, and energy.
  • Improved irrigation uniformity, with a direct impact on fruit quality.
  • Increased yield per hectare due to higher planting density.
  • Reducing plastic waste by replacing irrigation tapes.
  • Reduced maintenance and extended system lifespan.
  • Improved ergonomics in harvesting tasks, leading to increased productivity.
  • Less need for floor disinfection.
  • Streamlining operations to optimize time and costs.
