How to Recover Lost Production by Making the Most of Every Drop of Water

How to Recover Lost Production by Making the Most of Every Drop of Water

Blueberry Farm

A producer specializing in hydroponic blueberry cultivation located in Huelva, with a model focused on high productivity and resource optimization.

The farm covers an area of 10 hectares and relies on advanced irrigation and Fertigation systems for its production, where efficient water management is critical to ensuring profitability.

The Challenge

The main challenge arose from water supply restrictions, which reduced water availability to the point where only 70% of the cultivated area could be irrigated.

This resulted in a direct loss of 30% of production.

In addition, the supply system combined two sources with very different costs:

  • Water from a public water system, at a low cost.
  • Desalinated water, which is expensive due to the treatment required.

In this context, the producer needed to increase water availability without significantly raising costs, as well as reduce its reliance on external sources.

The Solution

AZUD proposed the construction of the water reuse plant AZUD WATERTECH Recypack, designed to recover and treat drainage water from hydroponic crops.

The solution incorporates a comprehensive process that ensures the safe reuse of water:

  • Advanced Prefiltration using AZUD HELIX AUTOMATIC AA disc filters, which remove suspended solids.
  • Microfiltration, to maximize the quality of the treated water.
  • Disinfection Using Advanced Oxidation, ensuring the elimination of pathogens and preventing risks to the crop.

Benefits of the Solution

The installation of the AZUD WATERTECH Recypack plant made it possible to completely transform water management at the facility:

  • +30% increase in water availability, thanks to the reuse of drainage water.
  • Recovery of the 100% of the irrigated area, rising from 70% to 100%.
  • Restoration of the 100% of production.
  • Reduction in Fertilizer Consumption, by reusing the nutrients found in the drainage water.
  • Direct financial savings: the producer reduced costs by approximately one pallet per month the purchase of fertilizers.
  • Less reliance on costly water sources, such as desalination.
