Containerized Water Treatment for Manganese Removal in Municipal Water Supplies

Ayuntamiento de Aldea del Fresno

AQUALIA It is one of the leading companies in comprehensive water cycle management in Spain and Europe, with an international presence. Its operations encompass water collection, treatment, distribution, sanitation, and wastewater treatment, serving millions of citizens and public administrations.

AQUALIA operates according to principles of operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and public health safeguards, and is a key player in the responsible management of water resources in municipalities such as Aldea del Fresno (Madrid), where it has taken action to resolve a serious water quality problem and ensure the future management of the drinking water supply.

Location: Aldea del Fresno (Madrid)

The Challenge

The Aldea del Fresno City Council, through AQUALIA, was facing a serious water quality problem due to the high concentration of dissolved manganese in the groundwater, with values ranging from 500 and 1,000 ppb, well above the legal limit of 50 ppb established by the Royal Decree 03/2023 for water intended for human consumption.

This situation led to months of repeated interruptions in the drinking water supply, with a significant social impact on the population and an ongoing dependence on tank trucks, which entailed high economic costs, a significant increase in the carbon footprint associated with water transportation, and a solution that was clearly unsustainable in the medium and long term.

The challenge was to restore the continuous supply of drinking water, in compliance with health regulations, in a reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible manner.

The Solution

From AZUD, and in close collaboration with AQUALIA, the design data provided by the client was analyzed to determine the best technical and economic solution, optimizing the available space and minimizing the consumption of water, energy, and reagents.

The solution implemented was a containerized water treatment plant AZUD, consisting of two 40-foot high-cube containers, designed to treat a flow rate of up to 180 m³/h and specifically designed for the manganese removal.

Each container includes:

  • Prefiltration using self-cleaning disc filters AZUD HELIX AUTOMATIC, with five filtering elements and very low water and energy consumption, for the removal of suspended solids and the protection of downstream stages.
  • Filtration in sand and pyrolusite beds, housed in PA or FRP bottles, with an automatic backwash system, capable of removing manganese and iron to meet drinking water standards, with a filtration rating of 30 µm.
  • Dosing and pH Adjustment System, through proportional dosing with continuous measurement, optimizing the oxidation of dissolved manganese without chemical overdosing.
  • Measurement and Control Equipment (pressure, flow rate, and level) that ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Corrosion-resistant electrical cabinet and automation system using PLC and Touchscreen, with software developed by AZUD, which enables autonomous management, historical data logging, alarms, and remote control.

The entire complex was designed based on a single concept Plug & Play, thereby reducing civil engineering work and implementation timelines.

Benefits of the Solution

Thanks to the solution that was implemented:

  • It has been Restored continuous drinking water supply, with official health approval.
  • Power outages and the reliance on water tankers have been eliminated.
  • There has been a drastic reduction in the operating costs and the CO₂ emissions related to water transportation.
  • AQUALIA has found a structural solution to a critical problem, thereby strengthening the City Council’s confidence in its technical capabilities.
  • With a modest investment, a very high recurring expense has been eliminated, resulting in a sustainable solution from the standpoint of economic, environmental, and social.

Related Services

AZUD conducted a comprehensive analysis of the project context, taking into account pump curves, head losses, distances, elevations, existing materials, operational limitations, and actual operational needs.

The plant was designed, manufactured, commissioned, and validated by the AZUD engineering team, with follow-up visits and technical support to ensure proper long-term operation.
