The Al-Jabal Al-Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Egypt, serving millions of residents in Greater Cairo.

This infrastructure is key to sustainable water management in the region, as it enables:

  • Treat urban and industrial wastewater to high quality standards.
  • To facilitate the safe reuse of treated water in agriculture and Irrigation.
  • Reduce the environmental impact on nearby aquatic ecosystems.

Its high treatment capacity makes it a critical asset within the country’s water system.

 

The Challenge

 

The washing system for the sludge dewatering presses had recurring problems stemming from the quality of the process water:

  • The presence of fine particles that caused frequent clogging of the nozzles.
  • Reduced cleaning efficiency of belts and presses.
  • Increased maintenance needs.
  • Unplanned operational stoppages (downtime).
  • Total Suspended Solids (TSS) levels exceeding 100 mg/L.

This situation compromised the operational availability of the equipment and resulted in additional costs at a large-scale, mission-critical facility.

 

 

The Solution

 

To resolve the problem, an AZUD HELIX AUTOMATIC automatic disc filtration system was installed in the service water circuit that supplies the washing system for the dewatering presses.

The solution was developed in collaboration with our partner NEW AQUA SYSTEMS, ensuring seamless integration into the existing system.

The filtration system removes the suspended particles that cause blockages, ensuring water quality suitable for continuous and reliable operation.
