Supra-regional Operational Groups (GOS, Spanish acronym) are relevant associations to develop innovative actions and face present and future challenges by taking advantage of a great diversity of complementary approaches which guarantee a success search for the best solutions. Their actions are carried out through joint and coordinated works within the frame of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability.

Within this context, G.O. Subalma faces the ambitious challenge of improve productivity, competitiveness and sustainability in the olive sector and olive oil production. Indeed, Spain is the world’s largest exporter of olive oil and, therefore, it is imperative a proper treatment of the waste derived from the oil production process and its recovery and valorization is one of the main concerns of the sector.

G.O. Subalma efforts are aimed to generate alternatives that contribute to get a substantial improvement of the sustainable practices and the circular economy in the olive industry allowing the use of liquid by-products of oil production in precision irrigation, specifically, in subsurface drip irrigation (SDI). All necessary tools are developed to allow its use during agricultural production and, thus, inputs investment is reduced, water efficiency of the irrigation practice is improved, and different agronomic benefits are achieved.

This way, G.O. Subalma promotes the modernization of irrigation systems, increases the productivity, sustainability, and competitiveness of olive groves, and encourages the dissemination of knowledge to universalize the use of these techniques.
G.O. Subalma belongs to the call for innovation projects of general interest by operating groups of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-AGRI), within the framework of the National Rural Development Program 2014-2020, convened in 2020 by the Spanish Agrarian Guarantee Fund O.A. (FEGA).

AZUD leads this GOS in which also participate CEBAS-CSIC, S.C.A. San Isidro Labrador, Evergrant, Diputación de Jaén, and ASAJA Jaén. The project is 80% co-funded by the EAFRD and 20% by MAPA. The total amount of the investment is 568.758,11 €. The authority in charge of manage the application of this EAFRD funding and its corresponding national part is the General Directorate of Rural Development, Innovation, and Agri-food Education (DGDRIFA).
