New filtration technology to solve the natural Bloom of microalgae in desalination plants (RTC-2017-6080-5).

AZUD leads the project of development of a new filtration technology focused on solving the natural Bloom of microalgae in desalination plants.

This project aims to develop a modular solution based on filtration techniques for the protection of desalination plants against large natural outcrops of microalgae. The system will allow to reduce the impact of microbial blooms phenomena in the treatment plants with reverse osmosis membranes, which translates into a reduction in maintenance work, significant savings in operating costs and an increase in useful life of the elements of the desalination plant.

The development will be carried out through studies and hydraulic simulations of the behavior of both the fluid and the filtration systems, including experimental tests with pilot equipment and different types of microalgae.

The work team that participates in the BLOOM project gathers collaborators specialized in different subjects as it is a multidisciplinary research. Together with AZUD, the company Drops & Bubbles Tecnología, S.L., Spin-Off of the University of Seville specializes in fluid dynamics. Also part of the research team is the University of Seville itself through the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Fluid Mechanics (US-MPFLOW) and the Institute of Plant Biochemistry and Photosynthesis (US-IBVF), a specialist in microalgae biotechnology.

The project has been funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities - State Research Agency and co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the call RETOS-COLLABORATION 2017 that supports projects in cooperation between companies and research organizations, whose objective is to promote technological development, innovation and quality research.
