Minimizing the water footprint of tomato cultivation under abiotic stress conditions.

The current overexploitation of natural resources is leading to an unsustainable water shortage; therefore, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) warns of the need to modernize irrigation systems in order to increase water efficiency.
This is a challenge that can only be addressed through innovative and viable solutions that spark a new agricultural revolution, leading to an increase in sustainable food production through the application of resilient agricultural practices that contribute to the preservation of ecosystems, strengthen the ability to adapt to climate change, and optimize productive resources.
At AZUD, we know that no single solution can succeed on its own, which is why we promote parallel development across different sectors.
The goal of the TOMABIOTIC project is to develop new solutions for more sustainable agriculture based on reducing the water footprint of one of the world’s most widely grown crops, the tomato, enabling the development of varieties with high tolerance to abiotic stress, as well as their implementation in seasonal crop production through subsurface irrigation optimization techniques.
