New filtration technology to address natural microalgal blooms at desalination plants.

AZUD is leading this project to develop a new filtration technology aimed at addressing natural microalgal blooms in desalination plants. The goal is to develop a modular solution based on filtration techniques to protect desalination plants from large natural microalgal blooms.

The goal of this development is to reduce the impact of microalgal blooms on reverse osmosis membrane treatment plants, which results in reduced maintenance work, significant savings in operating costs, and an extended service life for the components of the desalination plant.

The development is carried out through hydraulic studies and simulations of the behavior of both the fluid and the Filtration systems, including experimental tests using pilot-scale equipment and different types of microalgae.

Funding

The BLOOM project (RTC-2017-6080-5) is funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities – State Research Agency and co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), as part of the 2017 RETOS-COLABORACIÓN call for proposals, which supports collaborative projects between companies and research organizations aimed at promoting technological development, innovation, and high-quality research.
