Research on water reclamation and the application of artificial intelligence to promote agricultural resilience in the face of climate change and water scarcity.

Europe is experiencing population growth and increasing demand for and pressure on water resources. In this context, it is essential to invest in new water sources; therefore, water reuse has gained significant strategic importance, especially for agricultural irrigation.
The implementation of supportive policies, new regulations, and improvements in the quality assurance of reclaimed water have made it possible to promote and regulate the reuse of treated wastewater. However, there remains a need to develop competitive technologies capable of ensuring not only the quality required for specific uses but also economic viability and environmental sustainability.
The goal of the iRAIN project is to research and develop an innovative, advanced water resources management system that combines novel treatments for the regeneration and reuse of wastewater and its nutrients, along with its monitoring and controlled, safe agricultural application through innovative hybrid monitoring systems integrated with resource utilization and management systems based on artificial intelligence, achieved by fusing data from satellites, drones, agricultural robots, and sensor networks.
