Reutilización de aguas grises, el camino hacia la sostenibilidad y la certificación LEED

In a world where responsible water management is essential to addressing environmental and resource challenges, the reuse of graywater is emerging as an innovative and sustainable solution.

What is meant by “graywater”?

Greywater originates from sinks, showers, and bidets, and is characterized by a significantly lower organic load compared to blackwater, which comes from toilets and contains fecal material. Because of its lower level of contamination, it is much easier to treat for subsequent reuse, which leads to a more efficient use of resources compared to the treatment of blackwater.

It is estimated that approximately 75% of the wastewater generated in homes and hotels consists of graywater, with an average ranging from 50 to 100 liters per person per day, which highlights its potential as a valuable resource.

Greywater Reuse Plant: AZUD WATERTECH GW

To address this challenge, AZUD offers an effective solution: the graywater treatment plant AZUD WATERTECH GW. This plant uses a variety of technologies that work together to achieve high-quality filtration and help solve this problem.

Disc filtration.

Filtration system featuring disc technology and an air-assisted self-cleaning system HELIX AUTOMATIC AA WEIR. A highly efficient mechanism with very low water and energy consumption, designed to remove inorganic and organic suspended solids, and which also protects downstream equipment and membranes.

Filtration using ultrafiltration membranes.

Ultrafiltration membrane technology ensures the quality of the treated water by eliminating unpleasant odors, preventing sludge buildup, and reducing noise.

Disinfection.

Oxidant dosing to remove organic matter. In addition, there is the option of using hypochlorite dosing or UV lamps to ensure water disinfection.

These plants are compact and modular, making them easy to install in hard-to-reach locations and to operate afterward.

Success Stories in the Reuse of Urban Graywater

These graywater reuse and treatment systems AZUD WATERTECH GW have been implemented around the world. Notable examples include hotels where they are reused for irrigation of their gardens and office buildings that reduce their environmental footprint by recycling graywater for toilet tanks.

Greywater Reuse in an Office Building: Synergy

A recent project that deserves special attention is located in Montevideo; it was carried out for the Uruguayan company SINERGIA, which specializes in rental of shared workspaces and flexible offices. In one of its most prominent buildings—which offers coworking space for more than 200 people and features restaurants and entertainment areas—a graywater and stormwater reuse system has been installed. This measure has made it possible to reuse the water in toilet tanks, achieving a a significant reduction of up to 30,000 liters per day of drinking water.

This has helped establish SINERGIA as one of the most sustainable buildings in Uruguay, having earned the LEED Platinum Core & Shell certification, which certifies that the building was constructed and operates with the least possible impact on the environment.

LEED Certification

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum Core & Shell certification It is a high level of certification awarded by the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) for sustainable construction projects under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification system. LEED certification is used to evaluate and recognize buildings and projects that have implemented sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

The case of the SINERGIA building powerfully illustrates how the reuse of graywater can transform the sustainability of buildings and businesses. Not only does it reduce potable water consumption, but it also contributes significantly to resource conservation and the reduction of the environmental footprint.
