Filtration of discs to ensure high-quality drinking water in a protected environment

Drinking Water Treatment Plant

The project is being carried out at a drinking water treatment plant located in the Wadi El Rayan protected natural area in Egypt.

The facility is responsible for producing water intended for human consumption, in compliance with strict quality standards to ensure its safe distribution.

Because it operates in an environmentally sensitive area, the plant requires highly reliable and efficient treatment processes, capable of ensuring water quality without compromising the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem.

The Challenge

The main challenge was to ensure consistent quality of the feedwater entering the Membrane systems, in complex operating conditions:

  • Presence of suspended solids and variability in raw water quality.
  • High risk of fouling and membrane clogging.
  • The need to protect sensitive equipment downstream.
  • Requirement for continuous operation in an environment with low tolerance for failures or interruptions.

The objectives The client’s requirements were clear:

  • Ensure the continuous production of high-quality drinking water.
  • Reduce solids and impurities prior to the membrane filtration stage.
  • Implement a robust, low-maintenance pretreatment system.

The Solution

A AZUD disc filtration system as a pretreatment stage, installed upstream of the Membrane system.

The solution was custom-designed following a water quality analysis, selecting the appropriate filtration rating (130 microns) and sizing the system based on flow rate and operating conditions.

The built-in system includes:

  • Filtration highly efficient for removing fine particles.
  • Automatic system for self-cleaning using backwashing triggered by differential pressure (ΔP).
  • Integration into the controller system of the plant for continuous, autonomous operation.

This establishes a an effective protective barrier for membranes, ensuring proper operation.

Benefits of the Solution

The implementation of the filtration system has significantly improved the plant’s overall performance:

  • Improving the quality of the feed water for membranes.
  • Reduced risk of fouling and clogging.
  • Extended service life of the membranes.
  • Reduced cleaning frequency.
  • Stable and continuous plant operation.
  • Reduced maintenance requirements in the pretreatment process.

Overall, the solution helps to ensure a reliable supply of drinking water, optimizing operational efficiency in a particularly sensitive environment.
