Desalination of irrigation water to Optimize Citrus Production

Desalination of irrigation water to Optimize Citrus Production

Citrus Farming

The project is being carried out on a citrus farm located in an area where water is scarce and, in addition, has a high salt content. Under these conditions, the quality of the irrigation water is critical, as it directly affects the tree growth and crop quality.

Faced with an increasingly evident water shortage, the producer needed to ensure a reliable water supply. Therefore, he sought a solution that would allow him to rely less on external sources and make better use of available resources, committing to more efficient and sustainable use of water.

The Challenge

The client faced several limitations due to the quality of the available water:

  • The high salinity caused stress in the crops and hindered their growth.
  • Nutrient uptake was reduced, which directly affected crop yield.
  • There was a risk of salt accumulation in the soil, which could compromise its long-term fertility.
  • In addition, it depended on increasingly limited and expensive sources of fresh water.

In this context, the main challenge was transform this water source with high salinity into a resource suitable for intensive irrigation, without harming either crop productivity or soil health.

The Solution

AZUD developed a comprehensive reverse osmosis desalination solution AZUD WATERTECH Osmopack, designed specifically for the conditions at the facility. This system incorporates a comprehensive treatment process, in which Filtration plays a key role as a preliminary step to ensure the process’s performance.

The implemented system includes:

  • Integrated disc filtration as a pretreatment step, removing suspended solids and protecting the reverse osmosis membranes.
  • AZUD WATERTECH Osmopack, a compact system that reduces salinity and removes harmful compounds from irrigation water.
  • Design optimization based on the quality of the incoming water and the crop’s needs.
  • Automated operating and cleaning systems that ensure continuity and ease of use.

Benefits of the Solution

The implementation of the system has led to significant improvements in both agronomic and operational areas:

  • Reduction of salinity in irrigation water.
  • Improved nutrient uptake and root development.
  • Increased productivity and quality in tomato cultivation.
  • Prevention of soil salinization and preservation of soil fertility.
  • Possibility of using alternative water sources (groundwater, brackish water, or reclaimed water).
  • Improving sustainability and efficiency in water use.

As a result, water is no longer a constraint on production, ensuring high-quality Irrigation even in times of water scarcity. Farmers can thus protect their crops and soil, while improving efficiency and ensuring the system’s long-term viability.
