SUB-SURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION Is Revolutionizing the Cultivation of Corn, Soybeans, and Wheat in Argentina

Agrodrip and Halpern

The installation company Agrodrip and Halpern, a leading provider of irrigation systems in Argentina, have partnered with AZUD to develop a large-scale project in the region of Córdoba, Argentina.

Halpern, as a key importer of AZUD technology in the country, has made it possible to bring advanced drip irrigation solutions to producers such as Ascanelli SA, a major player in agricultural production in corn, soybeans, and wheat. Ascanelli SA also has a distinguished track record in the manufacture of agricultural machinery, with more than 60 years in the market.

This irrigation project marks their first foray into agriculture using modern irrigation systems.

Province: Córdoba
Country: Argentina

The Challenge

The region of Córdoba It receives annual rainfall ranging from 900 to 1,000 mm, which is concentrated mainly in the months of October through April.

However, the winter is dry, with only 10% of the annual rainfall, making it impossible to sustain productive crops during this season.

In addition, the region has been affected by a severe drought for several years, which has led to a water deficit important.

Ascanelli SA, like many producers in the region, faces the challenge of supplementing natural rainfall to ensure two summer crops and one winter crop, thereby stabilizing its production system.

The Solution

The implementation of the Sub-surface Drip Irrigation (SDI) It has proven to be the ideal solution for addressing the water shortage and ensuring higher production in the region.

The AZUD GENIUN PC ASP system, installed at a depth of 30 to 40 cm and spaced 1.1 meters apart on either side, has enabled precise and uniform irrigation.

In addition, the project includes the AZUD HELIX AUTOMATIC 4DCL advanced filtration system, which ensures maximum water use efficiency.

In this project, another key solution implemented was the AZUD QGROW V multi-channel fertigation system, which allows for the simultaneous and precise dosing of various fertilizers through Venturi injectors. This system, which also monitors parameters such as temperature, pH, and conductivity, ensures efficient application of different types of fertilizers without any incompatibilities.

Benefits of the Solution

  • Increase in summer production: The sub-surface drip irrigation system helps increase yields during the summer season.
  • Stability during dry years: In years with low rainfall, the RGS system makes it possible to double or even triple yields compared to conventional irrigation without drip irrigation.
  • Labor and time savings: The system’s automation and precision minimize the need for manual labor, while also reducing maintenance time and costs.
  • Improved application of water and nutrients: The system ensures more precise and controlled application, optimizing the use of resources.
  • Larger irrigation area with the same volume of water: Efficient water use makes it possible to cover a larger area of cropland without increasing water consumption.
  • Reproducibility: The system can be easily expanded to other areas of the field, allowing the irrigation panels to be adjusted according to the plot’s needs, even when part of the land is left fallow.
  • Erosion reduction: Unlike other systems, such as pivot irrigation, which can cause erosion in outlying areas, the RGS prevents soil erosion even during heavy rainfall.

With this solution, Ascanelli SA has achieved a substantial improvement in its agricultural productivity, ensuring stable crop yields and maximizing the use of water resources in an area traditionally affected by drought.
